Complaints about LawDirectory.au
If a listing is wrong, a placement is not labelled, content is inaccurate, or you are unhappy with how we have handled something, email [email protected] with the page link and what you think is wrong. We acknowledge complaints within 5 business days, investigate, and tell you the outcome. Factual corrections to listings are usually made within 5 business days of verification. Privacy complaints are handled under our Privacy Policy and can be escalated to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.
Complaints about a lawyer or law practice
We are a directory, not a regulator. We cannot investigate the conduct, fees or service of a practitioner. Complaints about lawyers are handled by the regulator in the State or Territory where the practitioner practises:
- New South Wales — Law Society of NSW (solicitor register) and the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner (complaints)
- Victoria — Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner (Register of Lawyers and complaints)
- Queensland — Queensland Law Society (register) and the Legal Services Commission (complaints)
- Western Australia — Legal Practice Board of Western Australia (register) and the Legal Profession Complaints Committee
- South Australia — Law Society of South Australia (register) and the Legal Profession Conduct Commissioner
- Tasmania — Law Society of Tasmania (register) and the Legal Profession Board of Tasmania
- Australian Capital Territory — ACT Law Society and ACT Bar Association
- Northern Territory — Law Society Northern Territory
Most regulators have a time limit for complaints (often three years from the conduct). If you are unsure where to start, the regulator in the practitioner’s State or Territory will direct you.
Fee disputes
Costs disputes may be handled by the regulator, by costs assessment through the courts, or through mediation, depending on the State or Territory. The regulator’s website explains the options and limits.
